Our beginners classes are your perfect starting point on this amazing journey, we will cover all the fundamentals, basic steps and understanding of the music. You will be part of an amazing and supportive community.

Community Classes - Salsa & Bachata

Want to give Latin dance a go? Can’t decide which style to choose from? We’ve got you covered with our new open level, community classes. Each week we will alternate between Bachata, Cuban Salsa, Mambo & Shines. This class is open to everyone, all ages (families bring the kids if you want), genders and abilities - no partner required.

This is a "pay what you can - koha donation" class, eftpos or cash available at the studio.

Our Beginners Courses

Salsa (Mambo) Partnerwork - Beginner Level

Tuesdays 6:30pm - $120/ 6 classes

If you want to learn Mambo from zero, this course is for you. From people who have never danced before to people that have some knowledge of salsa and want the fundamentals of Mambo. In this course we cover the basic steps of Mambo, timing, musicality (and understanding of the music), basic turns, connection tips, and the basic concepts of social partnerwork. We want to help you to create a solid base in Mambo with the right fundamentals and technique. This is your first step in the journey to a new level of dancing.

Bachata Partnerwork Beginner Level

Wednesdays 8:30pm - $120 / 6 classes

This course is perfect for those who have never danced before, are coming back to bachata or really want to master the fundementals. In this course we will cover the basic step + variations, timing, leader/follower technique, basic turns and give you a few examples of how to put these toegther for your social dancing. This course is fun and easy to follow, a great way to meet new people and jump into the world of Latin dancing.

FAQs

  • Both salsa and bachata are types of improvised, partnered Latin dance styles.

    Salsa originates from Cuba, with a rich history and flavourful music. This style is fast, fun and can be identified by a forwards and backwards basic and complex turn patterns.

    Bachata is a rapidly evolving style that originates from the Dominican Republic. Characterised by a side to side basic, elaborated hip movement, flowing turn patterns and a slower pace. This dance style focussing on the connection created between dancers.

  • Put simply, shines refers to a solo style of dance - without a partner.

    Shines are a great way to improve your basic, timing, body movement and confidence. Shines are perfect for those who aren’t so keen on dancing with a partner, want to get more active or challenge themselves.

  • Social dancing is similar to a dance party, where all the music playing is Latin dance music and people dance together. Social salsa and bachata are improvised dancers where the one person leads the other through the dance by linking together movements to create combinations. Couples generally dance one song together before find another partner to dance with.

    Social dancing is a great way to meet people, have fun and stay active.

  • No, we will partner up in class and rotate partners through the lesson. If you are coming with a partner and want to just dance with each other, that’s also fine - just let us know.

  • No! Our beginners classes are designed for everyone, especially those with no dance back ground. We will teach you everything you need to know.

  • Wear something that you can easily move in that makes you feel comfortable and confident. We recommend shoes without a lot of grip so you can turn more easily - jandels are not recommended.

    Bringing a water bottle is a great idea (especially for salsa). If you forget, there is a water fountain at TAPAC.

  • Yes, there is a large carpark outside TAPAC which is free after 6:30pm.
