Salsa Classes
What is salsa?
Salsa dancing is a social Latin dance characterized by energetic, syncopated footwork, clear lead-and-follow partner roles, and vibrant musicality.
Originating from Afro-Cuban and Caribbean rhythms and developed in New York and other urban centers, salsa blends elements of son, mambo, cha-cha, and jazz. Dancers typically move in patterns of quick-quick-slow steps, using turns, shines (solo footwork), and partner figures that emphasize timing, connection, and playful improvisation. Social salsa is danced in clubs and dance schools, while on-stage performances and competitions showcase choreographed routines and advanced technique. At its core, salsa is about rhythm, communication between partners, and enjoying the music.
Here at KD Dance, the salsa style we teach is mambo (or salsa on2/New York style). This is a dance style popularized by Eddie Torres in the 60s and 70s, which has its origins in the Palladium of New York (very popular in the 50s). Eddie Torres was one of the first dancers to regularise dancing in accordance with the clave, introducing the concept of “musical timing” (to simplify the understanding of figures and combinations). Eddie Torres is known as "The Father of Mambo", and many dancers and musicians have continued and enriched this legacy, which is what we know today as mambo, or salsa on2.
